Angel Moraes

Angel MoraesA Native New Yorker, Angel Moraes is one of dance music’s enduring pioneers and heroes. His label Hot’n'Spycy was one of the most significant imprints for pushing the legendary New York sound of the 90s. It lead to a 20 year DJ and production career that has seen Angel play at the world’s best clubs and work with the biggest names in dance music and beyond.

With a heritage deeply rooted in the burgeoning disco and house scene that he grew up with, Angel was a dedicated Paradise Garage member and like so many, the club became his life. Unlike the many, he was destined to shape the future course of the scene and through the 90s was instrumental in creating the famed New York sound that began at that time. Working with Victor Simonelli in the early days, those mid 90s releases like ‘Release Yourself’, ‘Burnin’ Up’ and ‘I Like It’ remain classics of the genre; forging the tough, bass, drum driven, industrial tribalism that would be so popular globally by the end of the decade.

Being one of the producers du jour, Angel was already working with the likes of The Pet Shop Boys, KD Lang, Jocelyn Brown, Roy Davis Jr. and Loleatta Holloway when his 1995 track ‘Welcome to the Factory’ exploded and inspired a different approach to what was possible within dance music production. On the back of its success, Angel began with earnest what has continued to be a non-stop touring schedule around Europe, Asia and the Americas.

In recent years, with the enduring popularity of classic sounding house, Angel has become one of the most influential teachers to a new generation of artists as his name continues to prevail. Moreover, he has continued producing the sound he made famous, including releases on stellar labels like Subliminal and Star 69 Records.
