Music publishing – Good Music, Good Business

phutekPhutek is showing no signs of relenting from his musical mission to spread his own unique and un-compromising stance on techno. With frequent gigs in Europe and the USA , numerous ADE appearances and consistently charting music, it’s a pivotal and exciting time for the Coventry based powerhouse.

With regular excursions on Intec Records, TK Records and of course his very own Layer 909 imprint, many are clambering for a piece of the action, with official reworks of XL Recordings rave classic T99 ‘Anasthasia’, Pants & Corset’s anthemic ‘Malice In Wonderland’ among his recent remixes. A double page spread in dance music bible ‘Mixmag’ was a clear indicator that Phutek’s style has begun to grab the attention of the dance-music press after years thrilling dance-floors.

When it comes to breakthrough artists, there are not many that can compete with the accolades achieved by Phutek in recent times. Carl Cox has championed him for many years including his much requested rework of Goldie’s ‘Inner City Life’. It’s no surprise Carl has snapped up further releases from him on his own Intec label, including a collaboration with US techno legend Frankie Bones.

Where many acts have jumped ship to the slower BPMs, Phutek has always remained loyal to his true passion for dark, driving, energetic techno, commensurate with regular support and salutes from scene leaders such as Nina Kraviz, Adam Beyer, Renier Zonneveld, Joseph Capriati, Alan Fitzpatrick, Eats Everything, Jam El Mar, Markus Schulz and many more.

Wehbba-DB1019Brazilian man of the moment, Wehbba is considered one of the premiere electronic music ambassadors gracing the industry’s most respected labels and parties across the world.

Rodolfo Wehba, born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has been spinning techno and house records for over a decade since his first international recognition with his ‘Flappin’ My Pie Hole’ EP on German imprint Killa Beat, back in 2006. After much recognition and success in Brazil, like many artists, he decided to make the move to Barcelona, the European hub for producers and artists – where he now has his studio and bases himself full time.

His distinct style and stellar production skills have earned him collaborations with the world’s most respected artists including Laurent Garnier, Danny Tenaglia, John Digweed, Stacey Pullen, Joseph Capriati, Stephan Bodzin, Marc Houle, ANNA and Christian Smith, a long standing production partner and Tronic Music’s label boss.

Since 2009, he has had a steady stream of outstanding EP’s that have all graced the Beatport charts regularly on labels including Drumcode, Soma, Bedrock, 2020Vision, Elevate, Knee Deep In Sound and Tronic, where critically acclaimed albums “Full Circle” and “Square Two” were released, in 2010 and 2013 respectively.

He has displayed his versatility as a musician with guest appearances with Jon Dixon and D’Sean Jones, from the Detroit groups D3 and Timeline, part of the legendary Underground Resistance collective. Since then he has secured interesting and diverse projects, including being featured on “The Magnificent Seven” movie promotion via Sony Pictures, remixing the main theme of the motion picture soundtrack.

Wehbba balances a hectic touring schedule with some downtime in the studio, developing his production style and testing out new hardware, most recently on remixes for Philip Bader and Marc Houle, making a debut on the latter’s Items&Things label, as well as on the original track ‘Unfold”, which was featured on the SUM compilation on Second State.

Finally, his much awaited debut on Adam Beyer’s Drumcode, the track ‘Fake’, was featured on the label’s much loved A-Sides compilation. Its success led to a full-fledged EP on Drumcode called ‘Eclipse’ which was released in February 2018.

Portable is Alan Abrahams, a South African born artist and producer who is also a celebrated live act. Portable grew out of the ruins of the post-apartheid era of South Africa. His was the generation that was to bring about the freedom of Nelson Mandela and all that followed for his country. He later moved to London to establish his electronic music career.

In London, Abrahams began recording as Portable, the experimental, atmospheric project that acts as a living link between the indigenous African sounds of his youth and those first records whose futuristic aesthetic broadened his horizons. Together with Lerato Khathi aka Lakuti he founded the record label Süd Electronic and released a string of seminal and highly regarded releases. A succession of full-length albums followed, namely ‘Cycling’ and ‘Futuristic Experiments #005’ on German label Background Records and ‘Version’ on ~Scape Records.

After 10 years in the London bustle he decided to switch gears and moved to Lisbon, Portugal. His album ‘Powers of Ten’ for the Süd Electronic imprint followed in 2007. A rich and expansive record, ‘Powers of Ten’ further explored his African heritage through a new lexicon of sonic influences.

Lisbon was his base for 5 years. Here he launched his alter ego project BODYCODE for Detroit label Ghostlyinternational / Spectral. He went on to release 2 albums, ‘The conservation of electric charge’ and ‘Immune’ under this moniker to huge critical acclaim. The next capital city would be Berlin, 6 years in this music capital cemented his deeply syncopated brand of electronic dance music. Portable’s music reached a new level of exposure when the 2014 track “Surrender” received a Best New Track designation from Pitchfork, and appeared in reedited form on DJ Koze’s critically acclaimed DJ-Kicks mix (named the #1 mix of 2015 by Resident Advisor). The video accompanying the track was named 2nd Best Video by Inverted Audio. This gave birth to further video experiments which Portable began to use for his many live performances.

Portable signed to !K7 and released his sixth full length album through the label in August 2016. The 11 track affair is his most personal yet and as such is a self-titled work that features plenty of his own vocal work as well as some choice collaborations.

Alan ,Portable is now resident in Paris, France with an upcoming Portable release on German Label DIAL Records. He launched a new 3 piece live electronic band called RANGEr, which is released on UK label Waella’s choice.

Besides touring regularly he also has a monthly radio show on as well as an upcoming residency at Paris’s Carreau Du Temple with rising Italian choreographer Francesco Collavino to flesh out a contemporary dance piece with Abraham’s music and video.

Tuff London

UK duo Tuff London exploded onto the house and techno scene with a string of chart topping releases that have seen support for their music right across the board from artists as diverse as techno luminary Carl Cox to BBC Radio One’s Danny Howard. Combining a wealth of musical knowledge and experience, Ben and Sam started the Tuff London project with a view to creating music with character and energy aimed solely at the dance-floor. Heavily inspired by the underground sounds of the 90s through to the current day, Tuff London’s breakthrough single ‘Sending Love’ was released on Toolroom Trax in 2016 and saw huge support throughout the scene that summer becoming a bonafide Ibiza anthem.

A follow up single ‘Frontline’ was released on Toolroom featuring the legendary vocals of Steve Edwards (Cassius – Sound Of Violence / Axwell – Watch The Sunrise / Bob Sinclair – World Hold On) and, with their profile rocketing, the guys secured themselves a much sought after spot on Pioneer DJ Radio giving them a monthly show to showcase all that they do to an international market. Ben and Sam continue to be prolific in the studio, releasing new music on the likes of Toolroom, Relief and Get Twisted including collaborations with industry legends Mark Knight, Todd Terry and Ron Carroll. With consistent high charting on Beatport, the boys now regularly perform at top venues in the UK, Ibiza and beyond.

UNER 2017 003From debuting in 2009 on Diynamic, right up to remixing one of his idols Laurent Garnier in 2015, UNER has been experiencing one of the most exciting times of his life. After a lifetime devoted to music, rewards have come in the form of critical and audience success, performances around the globe and releases on some of the best electronic music labels around. His music regularly appears on Cadenza, Cocoon, Visionquest, Cécille and Diynamic, which in 2014 released his debut album ‘432’, showcasing a personal side of UNER, the lover of house, techno, melodies and vocal harmonies. The album displayed the continued musical maturity and enduring form of this DJ and producer.

Looking back on recent years, we can see a progression that has seen UNER rise to prominence in the electronic music world. In 2012 he was one of the top artists in the annual Resident Advisor charts, in 2013 he was named best newcomer at the Ibiza DJ Awards and in 2014 his debut album received many plaudits. Every milestone reached is a springboard to the next step. In Ibiza he has become one of the leading artists at Ants, every Saturday throughout the summer at Ushuaia, as well as playing regular sets for Carl Cox The Revolution (Space). In the rest of Europe, he frequently plays at clubs like Watergate in Berlin or at festivals such as Sonar, while in the Americas, he constantly tours the north and south of the continent.

UNER unleashes his true potential during his performances. His DJ sets are powerful, full of energy and personality, and always dance-floor focused. His set-up, which is constantly evolving, combines four decks, dozens of FXs, touchscreen controllers and a sampler, meaning that the only limit to his sets is creativity. In an effort to reach new ground, UNER has developed a concept of live performance with piano, synthesisers, drums and guitar, which, together with two musicians, he explores the limits of electronic music and transports his music to pop and rock levels.

gusgus press

GusGus was initially formed in 1995 as a film/music collective. This spawned a short film and a critically acclaimed best selling album in Iceland.

After striking a deal with 4AD in 1996 they became one of the most sought after electronic music acts out of Iceland.  With the release of Polydistortion (4AD/Warner) in 1997, GusGus solidified their worldwide status to sold-out shows all over the world

GusGus has had a span of nearly two decades in which they have done nearly every style of electronic influenced music.  From techno to trip-hop, from house to progressive house/trance to pop, this collective has made each style their own.

The current line up consists of founding members: Biggi Veira and Daníel Ágúst

Their acclaimed album ‘Mexico’ was released in 2015 with GusGus once again presenting the audience with magical soundscapes that go from synth-pop “Obnoxiously Sexual” to deep techno “Mexico” to progressive house “Airwaves” and the chart topping stomper “Crossfade”.  The combination of the vocal artistry of Daníel Ágúst and the raspy melodic voice of Högni Egilsson (also a member of indie band Hjaltalín) surrounded by mesmerizing electronics, haunting grooves, with subtle string and brass arrangements blending in, creates a very unique and powerful sound produced by mastermind Biggi Veira which has been leaving audiences clamoring for more.

The band released the track, “Featherlight” in 2017, followed by an EP of the same name in early 2018. Their forthcoming album, ‘Lies are more flexible’, is scheduled for release in 2018.

Francisco Allendes

151025_Francisco_AR_007Francisco Allendes, Chilean DJ and producer now residing in Ibiza, is one of the hottest talents of the contemporary dance music scene. Active since early last decade, Allendes has grown over the years, releasing music for some of the most prestigious labels in the techno/house scene including Desolat, VIVa Music, Cadenza, Mood and Spectral Sound.

The Fiebre Amarilla World Tour in 2009 placed him on the world DJ platform and ever since he has been omnipresent in his home country Chile at Awakenings, Mysteryland and Love Parade Festivals, as well as on the world circuit at events and clubs such as Creamfields, MMW, BPM, ANTS, Hyte, Cocoon, Ostend Beach Festival, Kiesgrube, Sonar off Parties, Destino, Space and Privilege to name but a few. His sound as a producer shifts between synthetic house and techno grooves -always displaying flashes of organic rhythms and percussion. Allendes has produced several hits in the tech and house scene – the most recognisable being Esa Nena Quiere, El Ladrón de Mails and Espíritu. His production has been widely supported by some of the most influential DJs of our time including Carl Cox, Loco Dice, Ricardo Villalobos, Reboot, Josh Wink and Luciano.

Born in Chile and introduced to music from a very early age, his parents bought him a violin at the age of nine training classically for eight years. At 17 his musical taste took a turn when he first discovered progressive rock and synthesizers. The synthesizer was his initial contact with electronic instruments and opened his eyes to a whole new world, which in turn motivated him to research new sounds. Soon after he began to produce his own music and naturally he also moved on to discover the art of DJing. In 2001 he laid his hands on his first Technics and he progressed rapidly to join the circle of professional Chilean DJs. His first productions soon launched him on to the scene and led him to perform at some of the biggest festivals in Chile as well as giving him exposure to the international circuit.

In 2005 Allendes moved to Zaragoza in Spain and started working with DJ and producer Iñigo Oruézabal on the Monomachine and Garlic projects. He soon started releasing on European labels Immigrant, Catwash and Paradigm amongst others as well as playing in some local clubs. In 2007 he took his experience and returned to his hometown and, in association with his long time friend Marcelo Rosselot, started the first vinyl and digital record label based in Chile called Andes Music aiming to promote up and coming South American artists. Shortly after this his career received a boost when he released a track he worked on together with Alexi Delano named ‘El Coleccionista de Piedras’ on Matthew Dear’s Spectral Sound label

Allendes was beginning to discover his identity as a producer and developed his unique style (tech house and vigorous dance with Afro – Latin influences). He wrote multiple successful tracks: Espíritu (Kling Klong Records), Llovizna (Cadenza) and El Ladrón de Mails (Cadenza Lab), releases that caught the attention of many international and iconic DJs.

Francisco Allendes arrived in Ibiza in 2010 and immediately signed up a residency at Ushuaïa Beach Club. That season Allendes released the track Esa Nena Quiere on Steve Lawler’s label VIVa Music, a record that immediately became an overnight success and received high acclaim from Luciano,
Ricardo Villalobos, Reboot, Josh Wink and Tania Vulcano. In 2011 he was called up by Sven Väth and asked to be Cocoon resident of their party in Formentera (Tipic Club), a collaboration that continued throughout 2012. In 2013 he went on to cement a monthly residency at ANTS (Ushuaïa) as well as performing at Loco Dice’s Used + Abused parties and at the Privilege Closing Party.

The past three years has seen Allendes continue his presence in Ibiza still holding his residency at ANTS as well as playing parties at Space, Amnesia, Sankeys, Underground and Heart. He ́s also continued his worldwide touring, with dates in 2016 spanning Chile, Peru, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Croatia, the US, UK and Spain and this looks set to continue throughout 2017.

guiboratto-1-2 smallerIf you had to choose just one driving force behind the rise of Brazilian electronic music in the past 15 years, it would be difficult to look beyond the genius of Gui Boratto. A pioneer in the art of production and live performance, Boratto is at the heart of the electronic scene in Brazil with an influence that reaches across the globe.

Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Boratto began working as a producer, audio engineer and multi-instrumentalist in the early 90s with credits on countless releases for major and independent record labels working alongside Pato Banton, Garth Brooks, Steel Pulse, Desiree and Manu Chao to name just a few. Despite a successful career behind the scenes, the creative urge proved too strong for Boratto and before long he began dedicating himself to producing his own music in the studio. After a string of notable releases on the likes of Plastic City, Audiomatique and Circle, Gui’s first full-length album, the highly acclaimed ‘Chromophobia’, was released in 2007 through the Cologne-based German label Kompakt.

His association with seminal label Kompakt has continued to flourish over the past decade. With 5 full-length albums to his name, frequent high-profile remix and production credits – Massive Attack, Bomb The Bass, Pet Shop Boys, Goldfrapp, Moby, Paul Simon amongst others – and an innovative live show that sees him tour iconic venues across the globe each year, Boratto has firmly established himself as Brazil’s biggest electronic music export.

Nurturing up and coming Brazilian talent remains an essential part of what Boratto does and his music label D.O.C. was founded in 2013, distributed by Gui’s musical home Kompakt. He continues to work with many rising stars in his capacity as co-producer – L_CIO, Shadow Movement and Elekfantz to name just a handful of recent collaborators.

Gui’s genre-spanning music is particularly sought after by high fashion brands. Bulgari,  Bottega Veneta, and most famously Chanel, who used two tracks as a centrepiece for their stunning SS12 catwalk, have beaten a path to his door. His huge crossover hit ‘Beautiful Life – along with tracks like Acróstico – propelled Boratto’s music to a global audience and has lead to extensive use of his music in commercials for Absolut, MTV and Vice Magazine (Creators Project), as well the Spike Jonze film ‘I’m Here’ and numerous Brazilian films and documentaries, most notably a feature on supermodel Giselle Bündchen.

Paulo Olarte

olarte-presspic-02-amomodataAfter La Muerte del Perro Negro, Paulo Olarte was the only one who could take his place, but he didn’t. He said El Perro Negro was irreplaceable. Then Paulo was lost for days, weeks and months. Everybody thought he was dead, but he was not dead, he was celebrating alongside El General, a ritual for leaving the past behind. They were going like muevelo muevelo, pum pum mami mami y no me trates de engañar. This period of absence for more than six months gave him the name of El Mata Culebras, a name given to him by a Chola Caderona in Panama City the day he rescued her from the bad intentions of a cobra that wanted to kill her. He became known as one of the most incredible snake charmers in the Caribbean and Pacific Coast taming cobras and other poisonous snakes, making them his disciples. Even Arabs, Hindus and especially Persians know him for his abilities in snake charming. Some people even thought he had a pact with the devil, but after a few years nobody was saying that anymore. Instead they were saying he was the devil himself, El Diablo! Today, he is known by many as El Dragon Criollo. The reason for this name remains to this day a big mystery, but many think it’s down to the tropical skills since he developed as a little boy.

Andrea Oliva

captureThe journey of Andrea Oliva from his initial introduction to dance music to becoming a rapidly rising DJ talent is an organic one. Beginning at just 12 years old, Andrea was exposed to the sounds he would grow to love by a family member who was also a musician. Taking these sounds, he learnt to DJ at 15, worked in a record store, built an incredible collection of the most upfront promos and white labels from Europe and beyond, and very soon secured bookings at Switzerland’s top clubs. Residencies at Terminus and Pravda followed and soon he found himself on some of the world’s biggest underground record labels as well as taking on a pivotal residency at Ushuaïa Ibiza for ANTS.

Growing up, Andrea’s passion for music also saw him team up with local club kid and owner of Basel’s Nordstern, Agi Isaku, a connection that he has maintained through to this very day. They went on to throw frequently sold-out ‘Banditz’ parties across Switzerland, the renown of which in combination with Andrea’s legendary all night DJ sets soon took him across the continent and all the way to Ibiza when he was first invited to DJ at Space.

Andrea debuted his first release in 2004 on Swedish imprint Joia Records and, as he began to forge his own sound, he started releasing tracks via Viva Music, Saved Records, Be As One, Hideout, and Cadenza. As time went on, his production reputation began to build as did his studio and the support for his music. In 2012, releases included his ‘Click Off’ EP (Cadenza) and ‘Scene’ (Be As One) both of which saw him break into the Beatport Top 10 download chart. This led to Andrea being the most charted artist on Resident Advisor in February and March of that year with some of the biggest DJs in the business playing and charting his music.

2013 was another momentous year for Andrea, as he launched his summer residency at the place that changed Ibiza as we know it today – Ushuaïa Ibiza! He played to the masses at the venue’s hottest underground party ‘ANTS’ simultaneously topping the Beatport charts with his remix of ‘Rise Of Angels’, a track that ultimately became known as the ANTS summer anthem and spread like wildfire across the island of Ibiza as well as being one of Cadenza’s biggest selling records to date.

The ANTS brand has since gone from strength to strength and counts itself as one of the most successful parties on the island with Andrea returning as a main staple in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Whilst Andrea’s sets have become legendary, he is also very much involved with the direction of the events, identifying 100% with the ANTS philosophy both as a party and musically. Now in its fourth year, ANTS has developed into an internationally recognized clubbing brand and has thrown parties at the huge Mexican BPM Festival and Miami WMC as well as at clubs and festivals in Dubai, Argentina, Austria, Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, UK, Croatia, Malta, Holland and Switzerland with many more planned throughout the coming year.

Andrea has played at each and every party to date and is excited to be involved with all things ANTS going forward. The past few years have also seen Andrea notch up an impressive resume of solo gigs, touring extensively on a worldwide level and counting key slots at Coachella (USA), Tomorrowland (Belgium), Extrema Festivals (Belgium and Holland), Creamfields (Ibiza and UK), Radio 1 in Ibiza 20 (live broadcast), Shindig, Son us, Electric Zoo and We Are Fstvl as career highlights as well as dates at clubs including Output (NYC), Panorama (Berlin), State (Argentina), Cocorico (Italy) and of course the huge Ushuaïa Closing Party where he shared the stage with Marco Carola.

Indeed his diary shows no sign of slowing down with gigs lined up around the globe whilst still holding his residency at his home club Nordstern Basel. Production wise, his calendar has been equally as hectic. Throughout the course of 2014 he released a collaboration with DJ Le Roi on Conto 4056 (Objektivity), a 3-track EP named ‘Decomposing’ (which continued his long-standing relationship with British imprint Defected and which topped the Spotify Electronic Chart in May 2016) and he also had several individual releases on Viva Music, Saved Records, Be As One, Hideout and Moon Harbour.

Continuing with equal vigour throughout 2015, Andrea penned a collaboration with DJ duo Livio & Roby for their album on Apollonia, a huge remix for GUTI as one of his album tracks on DFTD, in addition to remixes for DJ Sneak and Italy’s musical maestro Jovanotti. But the cherry on the “2015” cake was when Andrea released his very own debut solo artist album “4313” in May and which was named after the postcode of his hometown. The album received widespread admiration and extensive support with fans, industry and press alike – and not only featured a range of sounds showing Andrea’s versatility and depth as an artist, but also took a contemporary musical direction and featured several fellow musicians showing Andrea’s ethos of both collaboration and experimentation.

Needless to say, Andrea’s dedication to the underground scene has garnered him widespread support and his music is appreciated by a range of dance music luminaries. “4313” was really just the beginning of Andrea’s album adventures – no sooner had he finished and he was back in the studio to follow up. A mix compilation album mixed back to back with Pete Tong and including further exclusive tracks from Andrea is due out very soon, in addition to a plethora of quality solo tracks, with releases on labels such as Desolat, Saved, Cuttin Headz, VIVa Music, Avotre and Knee Deep spanning 2016.

Ponzu Island

Ponzu2Ponzu Island is the pet project of Melbourne based composer-producer Bard Elishevsky, AKA Mr. Ponzu.

Comments on Ponzu:

“What would happen If Gershwin and the Yellow Magic Orchestra had a baby? Ponzu Island…”

“Elishevsky (Mr. Ponzu) has cultivated a sound which ranges from Melodic Electronica, to Electronic Disco, to Jazz infused electronic lounge… A fruity voyage, to be sure”

“Ponzu hits notes of 90’s video game music, but miraculously manages to avoid sounding kitsch. Instead of indulging in the overblown nostalgia 8-bit nerddom, Ponzu Island’s music is anchored by simple yet poignant Jazz progressions, 7th, 9th and diminished chords define the Ponzu sound.”

2Audiojack are the Leeds grown, Ibiza based duo who have built a solid reputation over the last decade as DJs, producers, remixers and label curators. Their original releases can be found on leading house and techno labels like Crosstown Rebels, 2020Vision and Hot Creations, as well as Tsuba, Leftroom and Culprit. They have remixed for labels such as Moon Harbour, B-Pitch Control and Diynamic, whilst Underworld, Groove Armada and Hot Since 82 are amongst the artists to have enlisted Audiojack for remixes.

The duo have been mainstays on Ralph Lawson’s 2020Vision recordings for over a decade, where they released their debut album ‘Radio’, and several bestselling EPs including ‘Get Serious’ and ‘No Equal Sides’. More recently Audiojack signed to Jamie Jones’ infamous Hot Creations label, debuting with the heavily played ‘Vibrate’ EP, which features their good friend and vocalist Kevin Knapp on vocals; one of many collaborations between the transatlantic trio. Audiojack also joined up with Damian Lazarus and his Crosstown Rebels imprint, debuting with their ‘Turya’ EP which brings the words of a guided meditation into a club setting to create a heads-down-eyes-closed hypnotic experience.

Running their own dancefloor focused label Gruuv for over five years has provided an alternative home for their original music. EPs such as ‘Stay Glued’ and ‘These Days’, and their remake of Jaydee’s classic ‘Plastic Dreams’ were received to critical acclaim. The label has garnered a reputation for nurturing the best talent, new and old, counting Emanuel Satie, David Mayer, Marc Romboy, Paul C & Paulo Martini and Gorge amongst its regular releasing artists and has held a position amongst Resident Advisor’s most charted labels year on year.

It was Audiojack’s passion for DJing though which drove their desire to produce music and curate a label in the first place. With two decades behind the decks they craft their sets with energy and panache. Accolades include a nomination in DJ Mag’s Best of British awards, the Mexican Dance Awards and mixing the legendary Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1. Over the last ten years they’ve toured in hundreds of cities in over sixty countries. Some of their favourites include fabric in London, Space in Ibiza, D-Edge in Sao Paulo, Kater Blau in Berlin, Rex in Paris, Fabrik in Madrid, Basics in Leeds, Harry Klein in Munich, B018 in Beirut, Electric Pickle in Miami, Vibe in Curitiba and Tanzhaus West in Frankfurt.

Audiojack added promoter to their repertoire in 2015 with the launch of their Sunday Social free party in Ibiza. Held at the intimate Veto club the ethos is aligned with the true spirit of Ibiza. A small place with good music, unannounced guest DJs, no door charge and affordable drinks. A free spirited alternative to Ibiza’s great but expensive superclubs.

Remaining true to their beliefs and staying relevant without being contrived is at the core of Audiojack’s success. The duo never rests on their laurels, reinventing themselves whenever necessary, although in an organic manner. In today’s fast-paced, ever growing electronic music world it’s not always easy to keep a cool head and maintain credibility and integrity. Audiojack stand proud as an example of how to do things the right way.

Brett Johnson

BRETT JOHNSONWith influences ranging from early house and disco to turntablism and techno, Brett Johnson successfully straddles the line between knowledgeable “thinking man’s” DJ and genuine, primal floor-filler. Brett’s sound is best known as groovy, bumping house with a hearty dose of techno elements, crafted and mixed in a way that is truly identifiable as his own. Whether DJing or creating music, his wild card is an ability to inject warmth and soul into his electronic sound. The result is an impressive discography filled with unique statements, otherworldly surprises, and undeniable club stompers.

Releasing his first record in 1999 on the now defunct, Aesoteric Records, Brett has released over 100 records and remixes for some of dance music’s best labels. The list includes Crosstown Rebels, Classic Music Company, 20/20 Vision, Get Physical, Visionquest, Magnetic, Freerange, Cynosure, F-Communications; the list goes on and on. Aside from a busy remix schedule, Brett is currently releasing his own music on the labels Visionquest, Classic Music Company, Get Physical and Cynosure Recordings.

IMG_7059A transverse flutist is an arguably rare sight in electronic dance music, but that’s not the only thing
setting apart trained instrumentalist and upcoming producer L_cio. Having become known to a wider audience thanks to his collaborations with floor-savvy artists like Portable or Patrice Bäumel, the Sao Paulo native doesn’t aspire to be a DJ, but instead delves deeper into live performance in a club context – which led him to become that rarest of all things, a live electronic musician holding residencies in regular clubs without ever so much as touching a record.

Even in the broad and pretty undogmatic sonic landscape that is electronic music today, he’s a rare
sight: Laercio Schwantes aka L_cio, the man with the transverse flute. Having turned quite a number of heads with his instrumental contribution to Portable’s massive 2014 crossover hit “Surrender” (“Best New Track” at Pitchfork, among others), it’s not been Laercio’s first encounter with electronic sounds – a series of hybrid collaborations, projects and releases sitting squarely between acoustic and synthetic modes of production show a trained instrumentalist and live performer that knows his way around the studio, too.

Born in Sao Paulo to a deeply religious family, Laercio has been around music all his life – amidst the challenges of daily life, his adventist parents would whip out all sorts of instruments whenever the situation would allow it, introducing a young and curious mind to a wide range of musical expressions. It should come as no surprise, then, that our hero quickly felt at home with notes and bars, choosing the flute as his first weapon of choice which he eagerly studied from the age of seven. Even later non-musical career choices always reflected an infatuation with the world of sounds, like his stint as a capoeira teacher, combining martial arts, acrobatics and dance.

With such a multi-faceted background in music, the inevitable tinkering with synthesizers and other means of electronic sound generation was rather a question of time than one of ambition, and sure enough we find Laercio roaming the parties of the mid-noughties, absorbing the unique melange of styles and scales that inform club culture to this day. In stark contrast to most other rave inductees at the time, however, he never wanted to become a DJ: his area of expertise is the performance, not the collecting and curating of other people’s releases, and it shows in the unusual fact that Laercio has held club residencies as a live electronic musician in venues like Sao Paulo’s The Edge without ever so much as touching a record.

It’s a charming anecdote that Laercio presented presented his first demos to a light jockey and not to a club DJ or promoter, but he did so knowingly, always appreciating a different angle and preferring a free-form approach to musical expectations – instead of locking himself up in standardized delivery. Maybe that’s why he’s held in such a high regard as a contributor by a growing number of dance floor artists such as Portable or Patrice Bäumel, all the while exploring his own sounds in the club trenches as well as in the summoning pits of the studio. It’s what led him to appearances all over the world and in all sorts of media, from London’s Egg Club to Boiler Room Sao Paulo or Live At Robert Johnson’s Lifesaver tour, a fascinating and highly idiosyncratic trajectory that is bound to hold more surprises in the years to come.

elekfantz promo 4 WEB
It all began in the summer of 2012 with ‘Wish’, a limited edition vinyl release in honour of legendary blues musician Muddy Waters. The wax soon found its way around the Brazilian electronic music scene and it wasn’t long before a fan had digitised the album and posted it online. Hundreds of thousands of listeners were drawn to the record and speculation about the mystery artist behind it was rife. Gui Boratto was most people’s guess but it was the Brazilian DJ (a future collaborator) that would eventually reveal the identity of the talented duo behind the album. Elekfantz had arrived.

Daniel Kuhnen and Leo Piovezani have known each other for more than two decades, initially playing together in a blues band as teenagers. While Leo continued his career as a professional musician and songwriter, playing with some of Brazil’s greatest artists in a career spanning 20 years, Daniel followed another artistic path. He was drawn to electronic music of South America and eventually became resident DJ at a local club. It wasn’t until years later that their musical paths crossed once again and an electronic duo was born.

‘Diggin ‘On You’ was released in 2013 on Gui Boratto’s label, DOC, and distributed by Germany’s Kompakt. It was the second best-selling song of its kind that year and spent more than three months in the Beatort top 100. A huge summer hit, it was remixed by Solomun and played on radio shows, charts and podcasts by such diverse artists as Chromeo, Pete Tong, Fedde Le Grand, Michael Mayer, John Digweed and HOSH, as well as licensed for dozens of compilations including Pacha Ibiza, Ministry of Sound, Defected, Global Underground, Es Vive Ibiza, Future Disco & Bargrooves among others.

After a year spent in a studio between Florianópolis and São Paulo, the duo released their debut album on double 12 “vinyl. ‘Dark Tales & Love Songs’ has the intimate melodies, organic feel and sensual harmonies that Elekfantz soon became famed for. Shortly after the release, they began a three-month tour of eleven countries and some of Europe’s biggest clubs and festivals.”They just sound different, handsome,” Gui Boratto commented, “real musicians.” The rest, as they say, is history.

The Brazilian duo have since feature on festival line-ups across the globe. They started 2014 playing the Brazilian editions of Lollapalooza and Creamfields before embarking for the European summer and debuting at Melt! Festival in Germany and Nowa Musyka in Poland among others. They finished the year playing in Tribaltech, XXXperience and Dream Valley and in early 2015 were one of the highlights of the first Brazilian edition of the Belgian festival Tomorrowland. North American shows quickly followed with slots in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Washington, Toronto and Montreal.

Working closely with conductor Jeferson Della Rocca and the Camerata Florianópolis was a career highlight, with several Elekfantz tracks beautifully arranged and impeccably orchestrated for a series of concert at theatres all over Brazil.

In the 2014 edition of the Rio Music Conference RMC Prize Elekfantz brought home prizes in two categories: best track for ‘Diggin ‘On You’ and best live act.

Robert Owens

RO“My work is about being aware of all the different facets and feelings in life. Much of it is driven by pain, but that’s just an emotion too. I can’t stand there and be like a pop star because I need to be real – and a real person gives from their soul and won’t let anyone taint that.” (Robert Owens)

Robert Owens became one of the figures most associated with the late-’80s golden era of Chicago house. In 1985 Robert met pioneering Chicago producer Larry Heard, who invited him into his studio. Together they formed Fingers Inc with Ron Wilson and released a series of excellent singles such as ‘Mysteries Of Love’ or the instantly recognizable house standard ‘Can You Feel It’. Following the call of Frankie Knuckles, Robert went to New York in 1989 to record a track with the Def Mix posse – consisting of David Morales, Satoshi Tomiie and Frankie himself.

Robert Owens is very much the most celebrated voice in house music. ‘Tears’, ‘I’ll Be Your Friend’ and ‘Ordinary People’ are just some of the tunes that have gone on to become truly classic dance records.

From the gritty but sublime Trax of yesteryear to the forward-looking projects of today, Robert Owens is one of dance music’s true legends, a man who has his roots in the future and his feet planted firmly on the earth – and a man who has never been afraid of sharing himself with others.

Robert stayed true to his records spinning club roots. As an innovative and globally in-demand DJ he is still dazzling crowds across the UK, Europe, Japan and America with his special blend of the deepest house and electronica.

Truelove Music is honored to welcome the prestigious Robert Owens into the publishing family.
